Which apples are suitable for baking?
While you can use various types of apples for baking, the best apples for baked desserts are typically tart ones that hold their shape well. If the apples are very large, you won’t be able to fit many of them on the baking sheet at once. Conversely, if the apples are very small, you’ll spend a lot of time cleaning and the dish won’t be prepared as quickly. Nonetheless, I believe that apples from your own garden are the best choice, regardless of their variety.
Ingredients for baked apples
- Apples
- Heavy cream – If desired
- Sugar – You can use either brown or white sugar.
- Cinnamon
How to make baked apples
As I mentioned earlier, there are various ways to bake apples. You can make baked apples with or without sauce, and you can also add nuts, raisins, and dried berries as toppings. For a touch of elegance when setting the table, you can even fill the apple cores with extras. Apples can be cut in different ways – into large or small pieces. You can also add the sauce to the apples after they are baked.
Classic baked apples with cinnamon and caramel
- Clean the apples. Remove the cores and, if desired, the peels, although I’ve never been bothered by the peels unless they’re unsightly.
- Cut the apples into your preferred size. When making them without sauce, smaller pieces work better so that most of the apples get coated in cinnamon and sugar.
- Sprinkle an even layer of sugar and cinnamon over the apples. For larger apple chunks, mix the apples together to ensure an even coating.
- Bake the apples at 200°C (392°F) for 15-20 minutes. Apples bake quickly, so they might lose their juiciness, and don’t taste as good when overcooked.
- After the apples are done, give them a final stir as the sugar syrup settles at the bottom.
- Baked apples pair perfectly with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
Baked apples with cream sauce
- Clean the apples. Remove the cores and, if desired, the peels.
- Cut the apples into halves.
- Place the cut side down on the baking sheet. This way, the apples maintain their shape better.
- In a small saucepan, combine heavy cream, sugar, and cinnamon. Heat until the sugar is dissolved. The mixture may briefly come to a boil, but the less you boil it, the better the cream will maintain its texture.
- Pour the mixture over the apples.
- Bake the apples at 200°C (392°F) for 15-20 minutes. Apples bake quickly, so they might lose their juiciness, and don’t taste as good when overcooked.
- Serve with ice cream.
