This recipe is truly one of the best ways to make overnight oats and plan your breakfast. It’s delicious and nutritious, appealing to both adults and children.

Overnight oats had long intrigued me, and I finally decided to try them. For some reason, I thought they were very complicated, so I kept postponing them. But now, even my husband, who typically doesn’t cook, can make them.
Making overnight oats is incredibly easy. When I usually make them, I don’t measure the ingredients—it’s so simple to do it by feel, adding ingredients until they seem right by taste. Then, an easy breakfast is ready!
Why Overnight Oats?
I like overnight oats because it has a different flavor than regular cooked oatmeal. Essentially, it’s similar, but overnight oats are definitely softer with a creamy texture, and since they’re eaten cold, they add a whole new range of flavors.
Plus, you can prepare it very quickly – in just a couple of minutes – the night before, or even several days in advance, and on busy mornings, add toppings and serve.
The Dairy Product with the Oats
Traditionally, overnight oats are made with plain yogurt. However, my favorite has become oats with coconut milk. I simply love coconut flavor so much that I’ve combined the tastes in this recipe around coconut, and in this recipe, I use my favorite toppings.
If you don’t like coconut or just want to start your morning with probiotics, use yogurt instead of coconut milk. You can add any type of milk or dairy product to the oats – Greek yogurt, whole milk, oat milk, coconut milk, or whatever suits your taste.
Additions and Various Recipes
When making overnight oats, let your imagination fly because there are plenty of fun variations. You can create so many different interesting recipes and find more ideas online.
For instance, you can make coffee-flavored oatmeal, or with fresh berries, salted caramel, apple-cinnamon, etc. The options are endless – just let your creativity work and let ideas soar.
Toppings can include all sorts of things not typically added to hot oatmeal – like nuts, seeds, and dried berries.
I give you a random list of ideas for additions to overnight oats: chia seeds, fresh fruit, vanilla extract, fresh blueberries, diced apple, sunflower seeds, chunky peanut butter, raisins, dried cranberries, bananas, chocolate chips, etc.

Which Oats to Use?
I recommend using old-fashioned rolled oats. You can use quick oats, but since they have a finer texture, they might become too soggy after sitting overnight. It won’t ruin the taste, but personally, I prefer larger oats for this.
Sweetening the Oatmeal
You can skip adding a sweetener initially to the overnight oats and add it in the morning. But you can also mix it right into the oats. From my experience, it doesn’t affect the final result.
I like to sweeten the oatmeal with brown sugar, but you can use honey, maple syrup, or any other sweetener. Often, jam is sweet enough that added sugar isn’t necessary.
Therefore, I’d say it depends on the additions whether sugar is needed or not. In this recipe, I’ve included sugar.
Serving
You can make overnight oats in two ways. One option is to use individual glass jars (a mason jar with a wide mouth is great) for each family member, so everyone has their own portion to eat straight from the jar in the morning.
The other option is to put all the oats for the family in one large container, from which everyone can scoop out their desired amount into bowls in the morning, like with regular cooked oatmeal.
Both methods work, and the result remains the same. You just need to experiment to see which one you like better and takes up less space in the fridge.
Ideas and tips
Although the name suggests the oats should sit in the fridge overnight, they’re actually ready to eat after just a couple of hours. However, you can also keep them there for several days without them going off.
FAQ
Why did my oatmeal turn out too dry?
You didn’t add enough liquid. Oats absorb a lot of liquid, and if there isn’t enough, the oatmeal becomes thick, dry, and hard. You can fix this by just adding a bit more liquid and stirring.
Should the oats be eaten cold or warm?
I recommend eating cold oatmeal. It can be eaten warm too, but cold, the taste is much better. Like ice cream. 🙂

Ingredients
Old-fashioned oats
Coconut milk – or another preferred dairy product like yogurt, raw milk
Sugar – I always use unrefined raw sugar, but any other sweetener works
Banana
Unsweetened cocoa powder
Raspberry jam
Coconut flakes
Making Overnight Oats
- Put raw oats in a glass jar. Add enough for one meal.
- Add yogurt or milk. The liquid should be about the same amount as the oats. More liquid makes it runnier, less makes it thicker and drier.
- Let the oats sit in the fridge with a slightly closed lid.
- In the next morning, add all the toppings in the quantities you can eat. The recipe gives approximate amounts. Slice the banana finely before adding for easier eating.
- You can stir the oatmeal, but I prefer to eat it in layers without mixing. Everyone has their own preference!
I hope you try making overnight oatmeal with this recipe. Just remember, not much can go wrong here. Feel free to use a variety of flavors and ingredients and experiment with whatever you have in your pantry that seems to fit.
