The Perfect Oatmeal Cookies with Healthy Ingredients

We’ve been enjoying oatmeal cookies in our home for years. I love that you can prepare them in various ways, and they always turn out great. I’ve compiled a solid recipe for soft and flavorful oatmeal cookies. You can also try vegan oatmeal cookies made with coconut oil and bananas, which give them a completely different taste.

One big plus of oatmeal cookies is that they keep well and are filling. Kids can have them for breakfast, and they’re a great snack for a midday energy boost during work or chores.

Add-ins for Oatmeal Cookies

This is the best part— you can add just about anything to oatmeal cookies: sweet raisins, all sorts of seeds, dried berries, chocolate chips, or even nuts. These add-ins give the cookies a great texture and flavor variety. I used to hesitate to add extras, but one day my two-year-old son added a bunch of pumpkin seeds to the dough. That inspired me to experiment, and the result was surprisingly good! Now, if I have any dried fruits or seeds at home, I rarely make plain oatmeal cookies anymore.

FAQ

Should I use quick oats or regular old-fashioned oats?
It doesn’t matter— you can even use oat flour. The flavor will stay mostly the same.

Do I need parchment paper for baking?
No, you don’t have to. You can grease the baking sheet with butter instead. The melted butter will keep the cookies from sticking to the sheet.

How do I make soft cookies?
If you want the texture of the cookies soft, then don’t let them turn brown— take them out of the oven when they’re still light in color. For crunchy cookies, bake until they turn golden brown.

Ingredients

Check the recipe card at the bottom of the post for ingredient quantities and nutritional information!

  • Rolled oats
  • All-purpose flour
  • Egg
  • Sugar (use brown unrefined sugar, white sugar is bad for us.)
  • Unsalted butter
  • Sea salt
  • Optional add-ins (raisins, seeds, chocolate chips, etc.)

Instructions

  1. If necessary, melt the butter until it’s liquid. The butter should be very soft, at least room temperature, so it blends easily into the dough.
  2. Add all ingredients into a mixing bowl, including melted butter.
  3. Mix the dough until smooth.
  4. Prepare the baking sheet by coating it generously with butter.
  5. Form dough balls about 1-1.5 inches in diameter, flatten them into discs and place them on the baking sheet.
  6. Bake at 356°F (180°C) for about 20-25 minutes, depending on whether you want soft centers or crispy cookies.
  7. The cookies may be fragile when hot but will firm up as they cool.

Tips and Ideas

  • For extra flavor, add a pinch of salt to the dough.
  • If the dough sticks to your hands while forming the cookies, wet your hands occasionally.
