Different Types of Cheese Balls

Cheese balls are primarily meant as snacks. Deep-fried cheese balls make a perfect appetizer so you can prepare them, for example, before making a larger and more elaborate dinner so that the family doesn’t have to wait long in hunger. Cheese balls can also be served at more festive events, such as celebrating birthdays with relatives.

For more festive occasions, you can make cheese bites from different types of cheese. This takes more time and preparation, but it is worth the effort. For example, you can make also mozzarella cheese or goat cheese balls, not only regular cheese ones. When deep frying mozzarella, it doesn’t matter whether you fry mozzarella balls or mozzarella sticks – both result in a good outcome. To get cheese balls with much flavor, you can also mix different kinds of cheese. In the cheese mixture, you can add aged cheeses, such as Parmesan cheese, and use creamier cheeses, such as cream cheese or mascarpone.

Ingredients for Making Cheese Balls

Equipment

Deep fryer or large pot – You don’t necessarily have to use a deep fryer for frying. I always use a regular pot or a stainless steel pan.

Slotted spoon – A slotted spoon is the easiest way to lift the finished cheese balls out of the frying oil.

Ingredients

Wheat flour – You can use all-purpose flour for coating the cheese balls. The result won’t be quite the same with whole wheat flour.

Frying oil – I don’t use cheap vegetable oil for frying but unrefined Extra Virgin olive oil, which is a better option for health. Olive oil is more expensive but worth the investment in the long run.

Cheese

Eggs – Use both egg whites and yolks to make an egg mixture. This way, there are no leftovers.

Breadcrumb – I always use regular breadcrumbs for making cheese balls, but you can also try, for example, using panko breadcrumbs, which add different flavor nuances.

Salt or other seasonings you want to use

How to Make Cheese Balls

  • If necessary, grate the cheese. Pre-shredded cheese is also available in stores.
  • Put the grated cheese in a bowl and add egg, flour, and a pinch of salt. If you don’t add any salt, the balls might be a bit bland, but since cheese is salty, it’s better to add salt very cautiously.
  • Start mixing the cheese mixture. At first, the mixture may seem dry, but soon it will become sticky and come together nicely. The final result of the cheese dough should be suitable for rolling into balls.
  • Start rolling small balls from the dough. The cheese balls should ideally be about 2-3 cm (1 in) in diameter. If the dough starts sticking to your hands too much, wet your hands with water.
  • Roll balls through breadcrumbs. If you skip breading, the cheese will melt and spread out.
  • Make sure you heat oil before starting to fry the cheese balls. Use medium heat to medium-high heat for frying, about 170-180°C (340-355 °F). Otherwise, they may stick together or stick to the bottom.
  • Ensure that you have enough oil in the pot. If the oil level is too low, the cheese balls may change shape or flatten.
  • Place the cheese balls in hot oil.
  • Fry the cheese balls until they are golden brown.

Ideas and Tips

  • If the cheese balls seem too oily after frying, you can place paper towels or a kitchen wipe at the bottom of the bowl or plate to remove excess oil.
  • Try to make crispy dough snacks also.
  • If desired, you can add additional flavors to the cheese mixture, such as garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, or fresh herbs like thyme.
  • Cheese balls go very well with both sour cream and tomato sauce.
  • Although I have never tried it myself, I am more than sure that pleasantly crispy cheese balls can be made in an air fryer.
